How it's worked out
CAGR is the steady yearly rate that would take the starting value to the ending value. It lets you compare things held for different lengths of time. It smooths over every rise and fall along the way, and it assumes no money went in or out in between.
The formulaCAGR = (ending value ÷ starting value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.
Common questions
When is CAGR the wrong measure?
When you added or took out money along the way, such as with a SIP. Use XIRR for those, because it takes the date of each cash flow into account.
Can I use it on company numbers?
Yes. It works on sales, profit or any other figure, as long as both ends are positive.
